Atheists; where would art be without religion?
Europe has literally billions (count them; 10 digits) pieces of beautiful art all inspired by the bible
Yes of course there’s art inspired by everyday life; Emin’s unmade bed with artistically strewn muck filled condoms, Van Gogh’s awe-inspiring ‘chair’, Warhol’s colouring in of photos and Hirst’s pickled cow to name a few. Of course I’m joking there’s also billions of bits of beautiful art which has no religious or mythical connect at all, but without the bible the art we wouldn’t have would be unimaginable.
I won’t even get into music or architecture
Diagoras the 5th century bc atheist, what great artistic achievements did he ever inspire with his ‘no gods’ theory?
Maybe the artists are atheists, but from Handle to Slayer, from Manson to Madonna, from Michelangelo to Dore, from Da Vinci to Dali. Christianity has inspired the greatest artistic achievements of man.
If a godless future lays ahead of us can we expect to look forward to more Tate Moderns and less Louvres. Less frescoes and more whitewashing?
If Tracey Emin took a dump and put it on a pedestal, would it be art? ?
Sorry to any fans of Miss Emin’s work out there…but, is it just me, or is it all a bit sh*t??? In fact, if she took a cr*p and displayed her excreta would she have sychophants telling her how innovative it was??
Do you think if I set fire to a (used) toilet roll and threw it out of a window, (and videoed it) I might have a chance with the Saatchi gallery?? Have their critics fawning over me telling me how progressive I was??? – at Least Hirst seems to have exhibited some half decent stuff (apart from his pickled animals) – by the way, not jealous, just baffled…
Hi Helmstock..for the record, I do appreciate art – real art – not some pretentious crap that supposedly illustrates ‘what the artist is really trying to say’…and by the way, I was not referrring to the unmade bed…I was referring to the BULK of Emin’s artwork.
Have you ever read ‘The Emporer’s new clothes’ (yes, it is a children’s story, but no – I do not read comics )…well anyone familiar with the story will know what my point is…nuff said (by the way…do you work at the Saatchi gallery??)
oh…and I do visit Galleries….I practically grew up in the Walker art gallery (Liverpool) and have had an interest in art ever since…friends of mine were doing their MA’s in fine art and they came up with some pretty ‘progressive’ stuff themselves…I lived in St Ives for a while too – well known for its artists (I had a lot of friends there who were artists)…each to their own though taste though eh? Now excuse me, my cats just been sick on the floor and thought I would photograph it….Turner Prize here I come….
Tracey Emin`s Unmade Bed- Why the Hoo-Ha????
Paragon Press is auctioning a lot of its prints and limited editions so as to expand its premises; and one of the items up for auction is something of Tracey Emin`s.
This made me think about the hoo-ha several years back when her bit of conceptual art, The Unmade Bed, was shown.
It was reminiscent of John and Yoko`s Bed-in, except it was the statement (or possibly fantasy) of a single woman.
The description of the piece as relating to a nervous breakdown amuses. Sure, if she stayed in bed for weeks. But a dirty weekend. Yes!
A dirty bed with pizza cartons and beer cans and condoms and dirty sheets….with cassette players tossed about.
Probably only a fantasy of self-abuse, though; as most of the women who have the guts to portray this kind of thing are either gay or they never get any.
Fact is many men still like to be the aggressors and don`t really wish to participate in sex as a sport. Whilst many women, especially careerists, do.
An eternal problem.
