Becks Canvas 2008: Riitta Ikonen Interview

www.becks.co.uk Beck’s have supported contemporary art for the best part of 20 years – lending emerging artists such Damien Hirst, Tracy Emin and Jake & Dinos Chapman a helping hand at key points in their career. This year we have worked with the Royal College of Art to offer four promising artists the opportunity to exhibit their artwork on an unprecedented scale — having their artwork replace the Becks label on bottles nationwide in August. Once again, providing a foot-up for the next batch of Damien Hirsts. Riitta Ikonen www.riittaikonen.com Riitta Ikonen, 27, is studying a two year MA in Communication Art and Design at the Royal College of Arts, graduating in June 2008. Originally from Finland, Riitta believes the Beck’s Canvas project resonates with her own belief of taking art out of the gallery for people to see in a wider context. In her mind individualism is a little space inside your head reserved just for you, like a private restaurant table that serves you anything you think to want. Riitta takes inspiration from ‘the performance of images, through photography and costume design. Certain things, usually small and insignificant, excite me to the point that I have to wear them and then document that process.’ Key achievements for Ritta include featuring on the cover of a ‘mail art’ book published by Lawrence King Publishing and compiled by Flat 33 (RCA Alumni). She has also been interviewed by WWF for her ‘Snowflake’ project, which was funded by the RCA and

Nathaniel Mellors – Seven Ages of Britain-Age of Ambition

In the last episode, David Dimbleby looks at how the 20th century saw ordinary Britons upturning ancient power structures and class hierarchies. The catalyst was the First World War, which embroiled the whole nation and called traditional values into question. The result was an ever-growing ‘democratization’ of culture, with art coming off gallery walls, becoming an instrument of self-expression at the service of the individual. Dimbleby looks at some of the great masterworks of modern British art (Paul Nash’s ‘Menin Road’, Francis Bacon’s ‘Crucifixion’), but also champions lesser appreciated art forms like broadcasting and domestic design. Finally, he meets some of the personalities who are shaping modern British art today: Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Anish Kapoor and Gilbert and George. Monday 22nd March 2010

The new Saatchi Gallery opened its doors for the first time on Tuesday evening, with celebrities and art world stars arriving in their droves for the art event of the season. Guests such as Mica Parish, Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk and Ruby Wax joined collectors Anita Zabludowicz, Ivor Braka and Daria Zhukova to see the new gallery and inaugural exhibition of Chinese contemporary art. ¿Prostitución?

¿Prostitución? Performance by Ambar Servin “Nit de l’Art”, Spain, 2009 Making reference to 12 of the most prestigious figures in contemporary art from Damien Hirst to Marina Abramoviç, the artist´s performance “¿PROSTITUCIÓN?” investigates the basic fact of many artists day to day reality — how to survive and move forward. By revealing the word prostitución in their names and making a final question (What does the artist who doesn´t sell him/herself) live of?) at the end, the artist challenges the audience to spark off a debate about the art world. While creating a dizzying diverse dialogue of confessional and melancholic veracity, “¿PROSTITUCIÓN?” subtly questions the boundaries between art and life. By use of an alter ego, the “Bambi,” Ambar Servin makes a statement of her position as a young emerging artists cutting a path for herself through the wild forest that is the art world.
