Why do contemporary artists get more publicity and are paid more money than traditional artists?

I mean an artist like Tracey Emin or Damien Hurst are richer and some are more famous than a fine artist who use traditional media. All contemporary artists do is recycle found things, alter them or install them as they are and then call it art while painters, printmakers, sculptors and artist who do drawings spend a lot of money on art materials to produce their work which is the kind of art regular people would like to buy. No one would want to buy an installation seen in gallery exhibitions for their home or work place – we want to buy a painting, a hand made print, a drawing, a sculpture don’t we?

Tracey Emin’s ‘Love is What You Want’ at The Hayward Gallery – Friday 26th August 2011

www.winkball.com Art much like beauty is often said to be in the eye of the beholder. It has almost unlimited interpretational value and whether it appeals to the viewers particular taste or not it is almost certain that an individual investigation into the truth behind the piece will transpire. That truth however lies with the creator and is woven into the experiences that shape their life and the love that conceived and consequently brought it into the world. Life and love are central themes in Tracey Emin‘s: Love Is What You Want exhibition at Hayward Gallery. Tracey is one of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Born in Croydon, London she is well known for being a part of the collective known as Britartists or YBA‘s (Young British Artists). The exhibition concentrates on every major period of her career and delves into intimate and revealing moments in her life. ‘The more you give the more you get’ is the phrase that springs to mind as Emin exposes herself through painting, drawing, photography, textiles, video and sculpture. The fly on the wall perspective that one is granted walks the fine line between privileged and perverse as we accompany her through moments of romance, desperation, anger, comedy and longing. The combination of the sexual and the political can be disarming, but there is just enough use of her trademark wit to balance the scales. The Hayward Gallery exhibition space suited this collection and made the whole experience very accessible
