I regard as that freaky red hair as an artist. the freaky, uncomfortable smile is something we need to be careful…. the most successful artistic installation ever…we all joined its conceptual….cruel and shocking than anything else
I’d agree that Tracey Emin is not my favorite (there’s an ‘e’ in Tracey, btw), but you have to put these YBAs in context – they’re conceptual and installation artists, not painters.
There’s more going on than just technique. Valuing technique over meaning, content, and the artist’s intentions and message is kind of a rookie move. "Overrated" is just your own perception of some particular artists and their work – just an opinion. It can’t be quantified.
It sounds like you know what you like and don’t like, so just go with it. Hell, there are worse artists than the YBAs, but that’s just my opinion.
I do like the Chapman Brothers, though.
Dali, sorry he’s overrated. I like his style but so many people when asked about their favourite artist will answer with ‘leik omg, dali is totally the best evar’, and there’s a vast number of infinitely more interesting and talented artists. Also Emin, and Magritte. My biggest reason for not liking an artist is their personality, that’s wrong somehow, isn’t it?
