Tracey Emin Art: Billy and Dolly Talk
Billy Childish and Tracey Emin talk
Tracey Emin‘s artwork is highly sexualised; that is the language of our society. Young girls are sexualised the moment their identity is formed and this often leads to a seeking of a sexualised identity in order to fit into a wholly imperfect society in steeped in denial. Strip lights used to convey Emin’s messages are a very good example of re-appropriation of a visual language formerly targeted at the male gaze. These inverted use of language is easily recognised but not assimilated by male audiences. This has something to do with the medium’s contextual history. I this frank exchange between Tracey Emin and Billy Childish it is the openness about taboo subjects such as STD’s that make it risque and, ultimately, interesting.

Why do contemporary artists get more publicity and are paid more money than traditional artists?
I mean an artist like Tracey Emin or Damien Hurst are richer and some are more famous than a fine artist who use traditional media. All contemporary artists do is recycle found things, alter them or install them as they are and then call it art while painters, printmakers, sculptors and artist who do drawings spend a lot of money on art materials to produce their work which is the kind of art regular people would like to buy. No one would want to buy an installation seen in gallery exhibitions for their home or work place – we want to buy a painting, a hand made print, a drawing, a sculpture don’t we?
